Mosquito Control (Vector Control)

VECTOR CONTROL
The Vector Control Division of the Wichita Falls-Wichita County Public Health District controls epidemics of mosquito borne diseases such as West Nile Virus, St. Louis Encephalitis, Western Equine Encephalitis, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Dengue, Malaria, and Chikungunya. This is accomplished by control of the mosquito vector.

MOSQUITO MONITORING
Mosquito populations are monitored by traps for different mosquito species; there are over 40 different species of mosquito found within the Wichita Falls Health District. General population density of all mosquito species within the District is determined by reports from workers in the field and citizen reports of mosquito infestations.

MOSQUITO CONTROL
Control is accomplished by treating water in mosquito-producing sites to prevent the development of larvae. Artificial container and agricultural irrigation sites are not treated due to budget and other limitations. Adult mosquitoes from these sites are killed by large area (6000-8000 acres/night) night sprays. It is important to note that only vector mosquitoes are controlled this way as they are active at dusk to dawn. Additionally, it is not a preventative measure as it does not kill mosquitoes that emerge after the area is sprayed. It is designed this way to protect beneficial insects such as honey bees.

Special, small area mosquito spraying is available for recreational areas and special events. Unfortunately, time and budget limitations prevent response to mosquito complaints on an individual site basis.
