Texas State Physical Activity and Nutrition (TXSPAN) program

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Obesity Prevention Program (OPP) is on a mission to make healthy living easier for every Texan — starting with our youngest residents. Through the Texas State Physical Activity and Nutrition (TXSPAN) program, we’re working to weave better nutrition and more physical activity into early care and education (ECE) programs across the state.

Texas Healthy Building Blocks (THBB)

We know that healthy habits start early. That’s why DSHS created Texas Healthy Building Blocks (THBB) — a recognition program that celebrates ECE providers who are improving nutrition and physical activity for young children.

  • We review progress based on best practices in child health.
  • We measure success with real data from the DSHS Chronic Disease Epidemiology Branch survey of Texas ECEs, covering nutrition, physical activity, and screen time habits.

The Healthy Pantry Project

Hunger is closer than you think. In Texas, 16.6% of people face food insecurity — including over 37,500 residents in Wichita County and surrounding areas.

The Community-Clinical Health Bridge Program (CCHBP) is working with local food banks to improve the nutritional quality of the food we distribute. By introducing strong food service guidelines, we’re helping ensure that every pantry box contains not just enough food, but better food.

  • Local focus: See how the Healthy Pantry Project is transforming food access across Texas here.

? Together, we can build healthier communities — from our child care classrooms to our neighborhood food pantries.
